In September 1925, the Nikolay Roerich's Central Asian expedition visited the Nubra River Valley (Ladakh). Unfortunately, the expedition did not have a chance to stay a little longer in this very remarkable place – cold came unavoidably, and they had to hurry to overcome the difficult snow passes, while they were still traversable. Today, this area is famous for many monuments of early medieval Buddhism, which indicate the dissemination of the Mahayana doctrine in these lands, which was included in the scope of research of the expedition.
"After the difficulties of the pass, it was an easy travel. After a piercing cold, the was heat and bright sun. Hot sands and vanishing mountains with snowy edges. Channel of streams. Somewhere, the stream disappears in stony piles, and only a loud noise reveals the flow of invisible water. Everywhere, there are thorns, tamarisks. And friendly people, residents of the Nubra River valley. In the period of high water, the river becomes a turbulent stream. It is autumn now, and the flow is divided into many watercourses of an unusually intricate and beautiful pattern. We go ahead, farther than our usual stop".
