The Roerichs spent in Leh, the capital of Ladakh, a little less than one month. The artist wrote: "Leh itself is the residence of the former Ladakh Maharaja, now conquered by Kashmir; it is a typical Tibetan town with a lot of adobe walls, temples and a chain of suburgans' stupas, which give a solemn silence to this place."

"Le is a wonderful place... On high sites, cleaned by winds, there were signs of great communications. Of course, these sites have changed: destruction and creation replaced each other. The conquerors added new piles, but the main silhouette has remained intact. Heavenly edging crowns the Earth as before, the same sparkling stars and waves of sand, like a frozen sea. And the deafening wind, taking you off the ground".
N. Roerich. Altai – Himalayas.
