Waves of fog – the Namche Monastery. In February 1924, Nikolay Roerich with his family made a pilgrimage to the monasteries of Sikkim, including a visit to Namche. "...Deep ravines, picturesque hills crowd up to the edge of the clouds, the smoke of villages and monasteries rises to the sky. On the hills, there is a plenty of colorful banners, suburgans or stupas. Ascending paths entangle steep climbs... Furry blue clouds of fog crawl more often from the side of Bhutan. Not only the snow ridge, but all the foothill steps immerse into thick darkness. It is hard to believe this hidden brilliance. Should we start to deny the very existence of the Himalayas?... Like in a fairy tale, like on a platter behind a silver apple, you can see hills and foothills of Himalayas. One hundred monasteries of Sikkim; probably, there are even more of them. Each of them crowned the top of a hill. A small temple in Chakong. The Great Suburgan and the monastery in Rinchenpong. On the next mountain, you can see the white Pemayan Tse, higher, Sanga Chelling. Tashiding is almost invisible. On the other side of the valley, Daling, and in front of it, Robling, and even closer, Namche. Monasteries are visible at a distance of forty miles. Do not forget that here we can see in an unusually long distance."
