In 1924, Nikolay Roerich stayed in Sikkim, in the foothills of Kanchenjunga. Many paintings of this period depict the views of this mountain ridge.

"Surely, the delight and admiration would be primarily associated with the ascent. When climbing, you have an irresistible desire to look behind the tops that rise in front of you. And when you go down, a kind of "goodbye" sounds in every outgoing peak. That is why you are so happy not only to climb a peak, but to follow these ascending ways, at least mentally."

N. Roerich. The Himalayas.

"When you descend from a peak, it always gives rise to some kind of sadness, but climbing is always accompanied by great joy."
