The theme of the Messenger was among the important ones in the work of N. Roerich. A hurrying man – "the messenger", according to the artist, also discloses this theme.

Z. Fosdik. My Teachers.

Arriving in Sikkim, the Roerichs met a famous lama from Bhutan – Tomo Geshe Rinpoche, who told them such a story: "The Great Holders of Secrets closely observe those to whom they entrusted their work and gave high orders. If an unexpected misfortune happens to them, they will be immediately helped. And the entrusted treasure will be preserved. About forty years ago, a great secret was entrusted to a man who lived in the great Mongolian Gobi. He was told that he could take advantage of this secret for a certain purpose, but when he feels the approach of his departure from this world, he must transfer the treasure to a trustee of his choice. Many years have passed. One day, this man fell ill, and during the illness, the evil force seized him, and he fainted. In this state, of course, he could not transfer the treasure to a worthy successor. But the Great Holders vigilantly kept their watch. One of them, from the high Ashram, hurried to him through the mighty Gobi, having spent more than sixty hours in the saddle without rest. He found the patient still in life and temporarily brought him to consciousness, so that he could finish the task entrusted to him in a duly manner. Maybe you wonder why the Holder did not take the Treasure with him? And why everything had to happen in this sequence? It was because the great Karma has its own special ways, and even the highest Holders of secrets sometimes do not want to touch the threads of Karma. Because each thread of Karma, being cut off, produces the greatest harm".
