The work is based on the legend of the Cintamani stone. A dark night, almost in one tone of indigo, symbolizes darkness in the picture. Darkness is primarily a spiritual concept, for the Buddha taught that darkness is ignorance. And here we do not see the glow of snow and ice on the peaks, that is common in the N. Roerich's works. And even three stars of the sacred Orion do not shine above the mountains, but are only slightly marked. A casket with the glowing treasure stone is the brightest spot in the painting, and the viewer's eyes are directed first of all toward it and the Lord of the Brotherhood carrying it, who is recognizable by portraits. In the picture, there is an action burning the darkness with the help of the Stone, which, in addition to the particular legendary stone that had been sent to the Roerichs, represents, in the broadest sense, the light of the spirit, which a man, who aspires to the Light, awakens in himself. On the one hand, the picture shows the ministry with the Stone, carried out by the Roerichs themselves, who passed with the casket across the lands of Asia, where the stone, according to legends, contributes to the prosperity of what it touches, helping to reduce the darkness on the Earth. On the other hand, without personal effort of "the Host of Beauty, toiling for the benefit of the mankind" (words of N. Roerich, quoted by Z. Fosdik), darkness will not dissipate. An opening in the ice formation in the artist's work, from which the procession moves on the steps (among the member of which we can recognize the Roerichs, following the three Brothers) – is probably located on the Rongbuk Glacier – as it was identified by members of an Everest expedition. During the sleep of mankind – primarily the spiritual sleep, the Bright Brotherhood works for the common good, burning the darkness of ignorance.
