The work represents the third part of the Heroic Suite. It was created at the end of 1917 in Sortavala (Serdobol), during the artist's illness. He painted the Heroic Suite based on "The Songs about Heroes" from the Elder Edda, an Old Norse epic. Apparently, the scene of the picture is built on "The Song about Völund". For the landscape, Roerich used a view with Ladoga islands located near his whereabouts in 1917 on the Ladoga Lake. For more expressiveness, the artist painted a chasing cloud in the sky, as if it followed the mental order of the character. In its movement, the cloud is directed to where the hero's gesture points.
