The work "The Last Angel", created in 1912, presents us one of the images of the Archangel Michael, in the incarnation of Archistratig – the chief of the Heavenly Host, holding a spear and a shield, surrounded by flames, according to the Byzantine tradition. The work is inspired by dreams and pre-war premonitions of the artist. "The Last Angel" is an image from the Apocalypse, depicting a mysterious and menacing creature described by the following words: "And the angel of the end will fly over the earth, tremendous, glorious, the last angel".

S. Yaremich. About the style of "The World of Art".
He expressed the terrible meaning of the last court better than none of the modern artists. "The tremendous angel of the end... the last angel" flies above the fire-flooded earth. You can see still the distant hills through a cloud of smoke, as if they promised hope, but this is the artist's dream. No matter how much we feel sorry about parting with the earth, the end is inevitable.
Another striking feature in the Roerich's works: the compact and harmonious style of his paintings. The shape of objects is invariable exact. His vision is based on ... the colorful approach of the ancient Novgorod painting school — a source to which none of our artists has turned his mind.
