Inscription on the reverse, on a wooden board: The first stone of the conceived structure. January 20, 1909. N. Roerich. A sketch for one of the fundamental works of this period. Contemporaries ascribed to Roerich "an amazing gift – to resurrect the old days, as if he played some special strings of our senses and imagination. In ...the works, we can see, like by our own eyes, many things that have been hidden and buried for centuries; certainly this is not a realistic truth, but a poetic one, such as it is presented to our imagination, so to say, generalized and, surely, also genuine at its basics". Along with another works, in "Building a City", the artist conveys the building ideas of the ancient people. "...Where you build, you do not destroy. Each structure is the multiplication of welfare. When the construction is in progress, everything in progress".
