One of the earliest academic sketches by Nikolay Roerich, made apparently at the Academy of Fine Arts. It is not a simple sketch from life with a lying dog; here, we see an emotionally colored picture. The young artist perfectly conveyed the mood of the dog – its posture with tucked paws and tail, its sadly handing ears, its eyes looking sideward – all this showing the dog's hard feelings. And we, the viewers, can only guess about the reasons for its sadness. This sketch was transferred to the museum by the artist's younger son, S.N. Roerich, out of his private collection.
