“The Viking’s Daughter” is part of paintings dedicated to the Scandinavian theme: “The Battle” (1906), “The Song about a Viking” (1907), “The Viking’s Grave” (1908), “The Viking Triumph” (1908), “The Song about a Viking (At Light Night)” (1909), “The Varangian Sea” (1909–1910), “Overseas are Great Lands” (1915).
This is one of the rare female characters of N. Roerich of this period. A year earlier, the artist created a similar picture –“Unkrada”, based on a play by Alexey Remizov. Unkrada is the name of one of the characters of the play, the niece of the king Iscariot, a girl who dreamed about the motherland of her mother-prisoner – the far North.
The sad girl wanders among the green gentle hills, collecting medicinal herbs, and sings a song: “Blow, dear wind, bring my message to my motherland, embrace it with your winds, press your breast against her breast. Please, help me”.
