1916–1919 is the period of N.K. Roerich’s staying in Karelia. Here he creates many pictures and sketches of northern landscapes, in which he reveals the mysterious primeval power of the North, his meditativeness and calmness.
The majestic and severe “Lapland Castle” is like a decoration for some mysterious action. The combination of cold gray-blue and warm greenish shades, characteristic of Karelian sketches, convey a sense of silence and freshness.
